Dr. Hira Silat is a US trained psychiatrist and psychotherapist. She completed her MBBS at the Aga Khan University, Karachi and then undertook her psychiatry residency training at Duke University, North Carolina, USA. She has since then worked in outpatient private practice in the US. Dr. Hira is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and maintains active board certification in the US and medical licensure in North Carolina and Pakistan. She is also a psychoanalytic candidate at the Psychoanalytic Center of the Carolinas and a registered Circle of Security® parenting group facilitator.

Dr. Hira was drawn to psychiatry because it is a field that utilizes the power of human connection and empathy to alleviate suffering. She provides both medication management and/or psychotherapy. In her approach to patient care, she enjoys getting to know each patient as a person beyond their diagnosis. This helps in uncovering the deeper issues underlying clinical symptoms and helps minimize use of medications. She provides a warm, compassionate and safe space for her patients to undertake the inward journey of self-exploration.

Dr. Hira primarily has a psychodynamic orientation to her work. Psychodynamic psychotherapy aims at discovering how early life experiences shape the way we interact with the world. This understanding enables us to gain greater inner freedom from restrictive patterns of thinking and helps us live fuller, more wholesome lives. She is also trained in and incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapies and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy in her practice. She has significant experience working with issues around anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, perfectionism, OCD, grief, life transitions, chronic physical illnesses, workplace burnout, academic stress, immigrant, expat and minority stress. She also has an interest in exploring the intersection between religion, spirituality and mental health, including spirituality as a source of strength, as well as the difficulties of navigating spiritual struggles.

In terms of medication management, her practice has a clinical focus on mood and anxiety disorders. She has experience working with patients with complex medication needs including perinatal patients, patients over 65 y of age and those with concurrent physical illnesses.
